Volunteering and helping others is something we’re both very passionate about, and goes back a long way in our family. Over the course of our lifetimes and especially since we’ve been together, we’ve both given ourselves and a lot of our free time to numerous organizations whether it be local within our community, or on a national level. One of those organizations is CROHN’S & COLITIS, a disease that has had a profound effect on our family for over 20 years. Since Lenore’s diagnosis of CROHN’S back in 1995, we’ve spent a lot of our time educating ourselves about the disease, and have been an integral part in helping to educate others along with our local fundraising efforts. We’ve had a tremendous amount of success over the years with our fundraising with Lenore earning TOP PLEDGE EARNER several times for the Hamilton/Burlington area. Several years back we took on even more of a dominant roll by accepting the responsibility to run the Hamilton Chapter for CROHNS & COLITIS, hosting monthly meetings at our RE/MAX office where we now both work. We also organized and ran fundraisers like GUTSY BOWL at Splitsville Entertainment where we saw attendance grow by more than double for the event in just 2 years. Along with CROHNS & COLITIS, we’ve expanded our volunteering efforts to other organizations like THE MISSION SERVICES where for the first time in December of 2019, we were blessed with the opportunity to serve Christmas Dinner to those in need. To say the least, it was a very humbling experience getting to chat and share stories with less fortunate strangers that seemed very appreciative for our time and efforts. It really put a lot of perspective into just how fortunate we are, and that even the smallest acts of kindness, meant everything to these folks. We’ve already signed up for next year and look forward to once again, making a difference and bringing joy to those who rarely feel it.
In 2019, we also decided it was time to go back to Church, something we both did at very young ages. Like many kids as you get older, going to Church seemed no longer relevant or cool to our friends and schoolmates. As adults, some people go back to Church hoping to find something, perhaps a missing piece in their lives. For us, it was a little of both, but also an opportunity to get involved and volunteer even more.
Our Church, ST. ANDREWS UNITED reaches out and helps many organizations throughout our community and the city, like NEIGHBOUR TO NEIGHBOUR, HAMILTON FOOD SHARE, WESLEY URBAN MINISTRIES, CITY KIDZ along with others. Our Church also hosts many events like ROCK’n BOWL, LIVE CONCERTS, COFFEE HOUSE etc where we invite and welcome everyone from throughout our community to come and experience an inclusive church atmosphere that welcomes everyone. As community leaders we are both members of the Board of Directors at St. Andrew’s along with volunteering our time on several other committees.
We’ve really turned the corner in our time at ST. ANDREWS with the many things we’ve jumped into, and have been welcomed with open arms. We look forward to always finding better ways to serve our church and our community, making everyone that walks through our doors feel welcome, just like we were.
